DEADLINE: MacDowell Fellowship
MacDowell in Peterborough, NH provides time and space for artists to work on creative projects. The Colony has expanded its support for journalists by providing additional residencies and project funding of up to $2,500 in addition to financial aid for accepted artists engaged in long-form journalism projects.
What is The Art of Journalism? As media resources continue to shift to free content and fast news, MacDowell is increasing its fellowship support for writers engaged in deep reporting and complex journalism. By giving more journalists residencies and the possibility of exchanges in a multidisciplinary artistic community, we are helping them sustain their careers and plow new ground for quality reporting that can change the way we see the world. There is not a separate application for this initiative. Journalists working on longform projects interested in applying should select the literature program and choose the nonfiction category. Please note long-form journalism on the project summary question on the application.
A MacDowell Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations and three prepared meals a day for two weeks to two months. There are no residency fees. Artists are responsible for materials and travel expenses; financial assistance is available to nonfiction writers in residence based on need.
Nonfiction writers engaged in long-form journalism projects are eligible to apply for small project grants through a fund endowed by the Calderwood Charitable Foundation. Project grants of up to $2500 are awarded based on financial need, the scope of the project, and availability of funds, as well as having been awarded a MacDowell Fellowship under the Literature category. These grants are intended as reimbursement for expenses already incurred and as support for the long-form project(s) worked on while at MacDowell.
