Investigative Reporting in the Digital Age

The Knight Center at the University of Texas at Austin's first course of 2020 is "Investigative Reporting in the Digital Age," which will run from Feb. 3 through March 1. Registration is now open for this course, which will be taught by a team of four investigative journalists with decades of experience in investigating everything from political corruption to environmental hazards to human rights atrocities.

In this course, you’ll learn the latest tools for organizing collaborations, for digging deeper with digital tools, for tapping crowdsourcing to investigate and for tackling seemingly impossible stories.

The course will be broken into four weekly modules:

•     Module 1: Investigative Reporting - from your first idea to highly complex probes
•     Module 2: Transforming an idea into an investigative plan of action — solo or as part of a collaboration
•     Module 3: Investigating on video — from mastering the confrontational interview to tapping your audience for help
•     Module 4: The latest data journalism and dataviz tools to deepen your investigative work

You’ll learn from an all-star lineup of four instructors: Lise Olsen, senior reporter & editor at the Texas Observer; Alejandra Xanic, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and co-founder of Quinto Elemento Lab in Mexico City; Lee Zurik, Emmy-award winning broadcast journalist at Fox TV in New Orleans; and Denise Malan, senior training director for Investigative Reporters & Editors and data journalist.

"Investigative Reporting in the Digital Age" is designed for both beginner journalists and advanced investigators. The course is free, thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
