Gov. Whitmer Proposes $120M For Michigan Drinking Water

"LANSING, MI — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing $120 million in new general fund spending to improve drinking water infrastructure.

Whitmer called clean drinking water a “fundamental human right” in her presentation to a joint state senate and house appropriations committee hearing March 5 in Lansing that was largely dominated by discussion about gas tax increases to fund road improvements.

The drinking water money request is supplemental for the 2019 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. Whitmer proposed it alongside her $60.2 billion fiscal 2020 budget on Tuesday at the state capitol.

The new funding would help replace lead service lines, fund research and treatment for toxic PFAS chemicals and other emerging contaminants, forgive water utility loans, fund watershed management and water distribution research, according to the state budget office."
