The Uproot Project

The Uproot Project, was founded in 2019 and launched publicly in March 2021 by Grist and a small network of journalists of color who cover environmental issues.

The Project plans to be a support group for journalists of color, along with students and others wishing to learn this beat. They aim to grow the diversity of voices in environmental reporting by advancing these journalists' careers, connecting them with publications, providing training and building community. They especially want to address the lack of diversity in newsrooms which cover communities disproportionately affected by the climate emergency.

Journalists of all races, ethnicities and backgrounds are welcome, but the Project's primary goal is to help journalists of color.
