Green Housing Standard: LEED for Homes

September 12, 2007

This fall the US Green Building Council expects to launch its rating system for residential construction. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes will consider sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality for single and multi-family dwellings. The system will apply to both new construction and retrofit projects.

Previous LEED standards have been highly influential in the commercial, industrial, and institutional building sectors. USGBC ran a pilot LEED for Homes program in 2005, and the real-world experience gained from that has heavily informed the final standard. Finding local architects and builders who are adopting LEED for Homes could make for interesting stories on the environment beat and real estate pages.
