#SEJSpotlight: Andrew S. Lewis, Freelance Journalist

#SEJSpotlight graphic for Andrew S. Lewis

Meet SEJ member Andrew S. Lewis! Andrew calls himself a hybrid journalist, straddling the line between hard-boiled beat reporting and longform magazine writing. For his beat reporting, you can find him at NJ Spotlight News, the news arm of NJPBS, where he covers environmental issues on New Jersey's Delaware Bay and Atlantic coasts. For his longer work, you can find him at Outside Magazine and The New York Times Magazine, among others. Andrew has been a grantee of the Pulitzer Center's Connected Coastlines initiative and a finalist in the NJ Press Association Awards "News Writing Portfolio" category. He also wrote a book called "The Drowning of Money Island," about a community left behind in the wake of a devastating hurricane. Andrew loves to explore stories that inhabit the narrow corners where water and humans collide. He's currently living in Southern New Jersey with his fiancé, three cats, 3,000 composting worms and roughly 2,000 honey bees.

When asked if he would recommend SEJ membership to his colleagues, Andrew said, "Of course. Not only for the resources, but also for the sense of belonging this organization provides for journalists like me, who are freelance and live in non-metropolitan areas of the country where writing communities, meet-ups, etc. are essentially non-existent."
