Meet SEJ member Mike Smith! Mike is moving back into journalism following a 40-year career in public relations and public policy, primarily in Washington, D.C. He is now the environmental reporter for Coastal Point. Mike is on the board of governors of the National Press Club in Washington and serves on the Press Freedom committee. He is also on the board of the Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis. Mike is a board member and secretary of the Quiet Resorts Charitable Foundation and the Bethany Beach Chamber. He married his Langley High School sweetheart, Cheryl Vosburg, who worked at the Roanoke Times and Roanoke Star before moving over to PR with Mike. Together, they built an environmental marketing and PR firm called GreenSmith Public Affairs, which they sold to a larger holding company in Alexandria, Va. The pair has recently left the PR world and returned to reporting and creative writing. You can "go home again!"
When asked how SEJ membership has made his job easier, Mike said, "The SEJ conference in Houston was the best education to help my transition back to environmental reporting. I had a wonderful experience learning from many of my heroes. I also led a conference mini-tour to the Houston Zoo and a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service preserve for endangered species prairie chickens." Join Mike at SEJ today!
