Meet SEJ member Spoorthy Raman! Spoorthy is a science and environment journalist based in Canada with over six years of science writing and two years of journalism experience. She helped start a multilingual science news portal in India called Research Matters, where she was the Managing Editor between 2016 and 2020. Later, Spoorthy started her career as an independent science journalist and is currently a Journalism Fellow at Hakai Magazine. Her stories have been published in Mongabay.com, Audubon Magazine, Scientific American, The Open Notebook, Science, Deccan Herald and others. Spoorthy is the author of the children's illustrated book "India's Adventures in Space" and another popular science book called "India's Science Geniuses," both published by Juggernaut Publications. She was a recipient of the SEJ-Uproot Project #SEJ2022 Diversity Fellowship, AAAS-EurekAlert! Fellowship for International Science Reporters in 2019 and Asian Scientist Writing Prize in 2017. She is also a member of the National Association of Science Writers and the Canadian Association of Journalists.

When asked how SEJ membership has made her job easier, Spoorthy said, "The SEJ conference, which I attended thanks to the fellowship, introduced me to some of the best journalists in North America. I have also greatly benefited from the mentorship program, with some helpful tips from my mentor for my career. SEJ's webinars have helped me look for new story ideas and introduced me to some of the environmental issues that aren't widely spoken about." Join Spoorthy at SEJ today!
