GCAN Event: Cruise Ships — Full Steam Ahead on False Environmental Solutions by ICCT's Dr. Bryan Comer

The Global Cruise Activist Network (GCAN) invites you to Cruise Ships: Full Steam Ahead on False Environmental Solutions by Dr. Bryan Comer of ICCT, an online event January 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Alaska time (3:00 p.m. ET) on Zoom.

Dr. Bryan Comer will present the International Council on Clean Transportation’s research on the environmental impacts of cruise ships, including those related to air pollution, water pollution, and climate change. Cruise companies are often early adopters of new technologies and fuels that they market as “clean” but, upon closer inspection, have negative side effects that are swept under the rug. Dr. Comer will describe the environmental tradeoffs of sulfur scrubbers and liquefied natural gas (LNG). He will discuss ways policymakers can use rules and regulations to better protect people and the planet.

Dr. Comer leads the marine program at the International Council on Clean Transportation, an independent, non-profit research institution. The marine program is dedicated to providing policymakers with the data and analysis they need to avoid, reduce, and eliminate pollution from the global shipping sector. Dr. Comer is an expert on global shipping’s environmental impacts. His work highlights how policies can transition the maritime shipping sector away from fossil-fueled ships to zero-emission vessels. Dr. Comer holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, as well as an M.S. and B.S. in Public Policy from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The event will be recorded with the presentation about 40 minutes, followed by questions, with priority for questions given to media and public officials.
